Luxardo Sambuca is the Italian take on the classic anise (black licorice) flavored liqueur.. The essence of anise comes from the "steam distilling" star anise seeds, which dissolve in alcohol. It is sweetened with sugar and bottled.
Luxardo Sambuca was named Best Herbal/Botanical Liqueur in the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Luxardo was founded in 1821 by one Girolamo Luxardo of Genova—but the founding liqueur was actually developed by his wife, Maria Canevari with a maraschino liqueur she made at home. Regrettably, the distillery was severely damaged by "indiscriminate and repeated Anglo-American bombing." It was rebuilt by the last surviving scion Giorgio Luxardo. Today it produces a full line of traditional Italian liqueurs.
