Matusalem & Company was founded in 1872 in Santiago, Cuba by the Spaniards Benjamin and Eduardo Camp. The name "Matusalem" comes from the phrase Esto es mas viejo que Matusalem, meaning "it's older than Methuselah." Methuselah is the Old Testament patriarch who is said to have lived for 969 years and in this way, "matusalem" is meant to evoke the aging process that these fine rums undergo. In 1956, under Castro's regime, the Alvarez family scattered away from Cuba and the brand became fractured and neglected until 1995 when a settlement resulted in control by Claudio Alvarez. The brand was re-launched in 2002.
Matusalem Platino rum is the silver (white) offering that claims triple distillation with a specialized blending and filtering process. It is recommended for "club hopping," which we think is indeed the Spirit of Cuba!
